Grossgmain Knowledge Trail – Discover Grossgmain in a New Way

From 1 August, Grossgmain welcomes a brand-new attraction: the Grossgmain Knowledge Trail. This digital hiking experience combines nature, history and culture, inviting both visitors and locals to discover the village in an entirely new way – individually, free of charge and whenever it suits them.

An Idea Inspired by a Long-Standing Wish

For many years, visitors have expressed the wish for guided tours showcasing Grossgmain's rich history, unique landmarks and local traditions. However, offering regular guided walks at different times of the day and on weekends proved difficult due to the lack of available guides.

Together with SalzburgerLand Tourism, the Grossgmain Tourist Office found a modern solution: a digital guided tour using the free SmartGuide app. This allows everyone to explore the Knowledge Trail independently, at their own pace and whenever they choose.

Discover Fascinating Stories at Authentic Locations

The Grossgmain Knowledge Trail takes visitors to six remarkable locations, each revealing a different chapter of the village's history and natural heritage:

  • Josef Meinrad Park
  • Marienheilgarten (Mary Healing Garden)
  • Plainburg Castle Ruins
  • Kneipp Facility in the Untersberg Nature Park
  • Hochburgerhöh
  • Kreuzleitn

At each stop, the SmartGuide app automatically plays an engaging audio story. Visitors learn about historical events, local legends, important personalities and the unique natural features that have shaped Grossgmain over the centuries.

Discover why Grossgmain was historically more closely connected to Bad Reichenhall than to Salzburg, learn about the medieval significance of Plainburg Castle, explore the myths surrounding the legendary Untersberg Mountain, and hear fascinating stories about actor Josef Meinrad, the Marienheilgarten and everyday life in Grossgmain generations ago.

Two Tours – One for Adults and One for Children

One of the Knowledge Trail's special features is that every station offers two different audio tours.

The adult tour presents historical facts, cultural background and fascinating stories about Grossgmain's past and present.

For younger explorers, a dedicated children's tour has been created. The stories are told in a playful, age-appropriate way and encourage children to observe, imagine and interact with their surroundings. This makes the trail an enjoyable experience for the whole family.

Collect Stamps and Earn a Sweet Reward

To make the adventure even more exciting for children, the Knowledge Trail includes a collectible stamp card.

Each of the six stations features its own embossing stamp, allowing young explorers to leave a unique mark on their card. As they complete the trail, they create a special souvenir of their adventure.

Children who collect all six stamps can present their completed card at one of the participating restaurants and receive one free scoop of ice cream.

Participating businesses include:

  • Latschenwirt
  • Assisi Stub'n
  • Restaurant at Hotel Vötterl
  • Gasthaus Vinothek Häfei

Explore at Your Own Pace

The complete Knowledge Trail covers approximately 9 kilometres. However, there is no need to complete it in a single day. Each station can also be visited individually, making the trail perfect for a full-day hike, several shorter walks or leisurely outings during your holiday.

Where Nature, History and Culture Meet

The Grossgmain Knowledge Trail combines outdoor activity with captivating storytelling. Instead of simply reading information boards, visitors experience professionally narrated audio stories exactly where history happened. This creates an immersive experience that brings Grossgmain's past vividly to life.

Whether you are visiting Grossgmain for the first time or have lived here for years, the Knowledge Trail offers fresh perspectives and surprising insights into the village's rich cultural and natural heritage.
