SALZBURG PREMIERE MARKING THE 95TH ANNIVERSARY OF THOMAS BERNHARD’S BIRTH
By Cassandra Rühmling
Will the Titanic be raised?
Will Immanuel Kant conquer the New World?
And what does any of this have to do with a lantern festival?
To mark the 95th anniversary of Thomas Bernhard’s birth, we present his grotesque stage comedy Immanuel Kant in the setting of a traditional coffeehouse. Join us on a voyage of the mind, where pure reason collides with the spirit of our times and old values meet new priorities.
Like Thomas Bernhard, Immanuel Kant struggles against the refusal to understand. At times, it is almost unsettling how strongly Bernhard himself seems to speak through his protagonist. The categorical imperative meets the categorical “what if.” When everyone knows things cannot go on as they are, there is only one command: full steam ahead!
“The world is what I take it to be.”
