Workshop Spinnen: vom Schaf zum Pullover im Salzburger Freilichtmuseum

We will trace the journey from raw material to finished garment and experience firsthand how textile fibers were once produced and processed on traditional farms.

Step by step, we explore the labor-intensive preparation of linen fibers—from stalk to spinnable flax—and follow the path from sheep’s wool to soft fleece. From there, it becomes hands-on: together we spin, ply, and felt.

The creation of thread has always been the foundation of all textiles—from natural fibers to today’s high-tech materials. You will experience this process by spinning with a hand spindle and learn how and why wool felts—and what it can be used for.

We will explore the properties of different natural fibers, discover how they were processed in the past, and what the resulting products were—and still are—used for today.

At the end of the workshop, you will take home a small hand spindle and a felted ball, along with valuable knowledge about working with natural textile materials.
